Paul Dacre (Mail/PCC) bullies blogger – Bloggers respond

June 25, 2011

Paul Dacre demonstrated the strength of his own hypocrisy this week, when he ordered his legal team to threaten Kevin Arscott, of the excellent Angry Mob blog, and Kevin’s webhost with legal action over a two-year-old post that had an opinion Dacre didn’t like in it.  There have been a number of excellent ripostes from a number of bloggers, which I shall link below:

Firstly, Kevin’s own response:  Paul Dacre, Abuse and Defamation

***UPDATE*** Corporal Jones

In short, it seems Dacre has failed at damage limitation, instead revealing himself as, in my opinion, a rather hypocritical bully.  Instead of ordering a take down, it would probably have been a better idea to avail himself of the right to reply that is the comments section of Kevin’s blog, as Mail columnist Peter Hitchens did.  It would almost certainly have led to far fewer people seeing the cached copy of the post he found so offensive.

***This post was prompted by uksceptic‘s suggestion for bloggers to link to the Abuse and Defamation post in order to help it rise up the Google page rankings.***

There’s also my post, ‘The unmentionable editor’, admittedly more ambiguous and off the wall: – I live in a village where the biggest pile on the local shop’s rag shelf is The Fail. My neighbours are not bumpkins. They buy (and buy into) the Fail’s nasty right-wing shit. Moreover, as Roy Greenslade noted, “I’d be surprised that Dacre himself even knows, or cares, about this matter.” Not that Dacre is any less of a bullying hatemongering for all that. But tabloids have always been a miasma of mendacious half-truths and titilation. Redress is important, and all power to Angry Mob et all, but sometimes you take yourselves too seriously. If you really want to make a dent in Dacre’s shell, I’d take a leaf out of his populist book and take the piss out of him big style.

And for all that, what Kevin said was quite abominable, entirely indefensible and he should have withdrawn it.

Whilst I wouldn’t have phrased things the way Kevin did, he is entitled to his opinion, just as you are. I think the fact that Dacre has been complaining about the idea of tighter regulation of the press, and championing the right of papers like his to say what they like about who they like whilst silencing his own critics is what has caused this response from bloggers more than anything. As can be the case when someone orders a takedown, the offending post seems to have been read by far more people than it would otherwise have been, so I’m not convinced it was a great idea.

Like much of the content of the Mail since Paul Dacre became editor then? Look, there is currently no form of recourse when it comes to newspaper editors. The PCC is a joke, the law requires substantial amounts of money to be thrown at it before you could even engage with well-defended papers like the Mail. Readers of my blog probably know that I’m a big Bill Hicks fan and he would regularly entreat people to kill themselves to save their own souls and for the benefit of humanity. He made a lot of points about how the good die young and the devils are left to run amok.

Paul Dacre has edited the Mail as they attack the weak and disenfranchised with impunity and I’ve written hundreds of reasoned, evidenced blog posts pointing this out with zero impact. The blog post under discussion here was simply a way of letting Paul Dacre know that he doesn’t speak for us all and that in reality he only appeals to the bitter, ignorant ranks of a dying breed of bigots. Search Paul Dacre and my words appear second on the results. That at least has some impact and others who wonder about the output of the Mail have a starting point.

I don’t think my comments, aimed at the editor of a powerful, some might say evil newspaper are anything to be apologizing for. If you want to be offended might I suggest you start with the mail’s campaign stirring up hatred of Muslims or gypsies or immigrants or.gays or any other minority group.

We need less focus on my profanity and more focus on what is really obscene.

Well said, Kevin. Personally, I find Daily Mail articles far more offensive than anything you’ve ever written, and I’m pleased that the takedown of your post has generated so much comment and debate.

Here’s another one from me. I’m thinking of pursuing the Mail strategy on this one against the Mail. When they ran a campaign to improve the quality of bread in the UK, they ran one article a day for nearly a year on the subject.

Perhaps the blogosphere should do the same on this one…

Someone did the same thing to me, on a website called I-mockery,only they posted a bunch of garbage, calling me every name in the book, and then messed with Google SEO so that it would appear under my name. This has to be illegal… It’s not a cool thing to do to a professional animator.
